Children born in the UK since 1983 or those born outside of the UK may be eligible for British citizenship. For those born outside of the UK, they will need to fit the criteria as laid out by the Home Office. Can I register my child if they were born outside of the UK but I’m a British citizen?

 

Yes, absolutely you can. You will need to fill in a form and return it to the Home Office. You will be required to show some proof and this will be highlighted in the application guidance.

 

Can I register my adopted child as a British citizen?

 

If either one or both of the adoptive parents are British then the child will automatically be considered a British citizen in certain circumstances. There is a possibility of this not being the case and if there is any confusion as to whether or not your adoptive child is eligible then please give us a call and we can discuss your situation with you.

 

I have British descent, can I register my child as a British citizen?

 

Not automatically! Descent only extends to one generation, so if you yourself are not British, your child will not automatically be allowed to register. There is some discretion in this and if you would like to discuss it further then please get in touch and we can help you further.

Children of settled parents and born in the UK

 

If you have settled status your child will automatically be a British citizen and will not require registration if they are born in the UK, they will qualify by birthright and will be given a British birth certificate that notes their nationality as British.

 

Child whose parents are applying for British citizenship
